Rugby League Mens 1sts
Time: Saturday 12.00
Location: 22 acres
Points: 0
It was a disappointing result today for the rugby league team, who were comprehensively beaten by a fitter, faster Lancaster side.
York matched the Lancastrians up front, with Daniel Marsden and Dean Bowmer putting in a string of big tackles, but the pace of the Lancaster backs and the ability of the halfbacks to shift the ball wide quickly was too much for York to handle. They were also led brilliantly by Lancaster’s MOM, England international Tom Lever.
To their credit, York never stopped going and eventually rallied to score an unconverted try by Andy Russell.
There were notable performances from captain Sean Spencer and Ryan Critchlow. Dean Bowmer took the York MOM award for his strong running and sound defence.
A disappointing end to the university careers of Dean Bowmer, Sean Spencer, Andrew Schofield, Ben Hepworth and Ali Jordan, but you can’t have a fairytale ending every year. The club will learn a lot from this game and will hopefully recruit stongly in the new academic year.
