Live Commentary
Friday 8:40pm
A domineering performance from the White Roses sees them swim to victory at Holgate Primary School, the tournament ending 87-49. According to the on-site reporter Natalie Nakesone, the event was a very one-sided affair in which Lancaster never came to terms with the strength of the opposition. The story of the day from their point of view.
This means at the close of play tonight the teams go into the second day at York 47.5 - 13.5 Lancaster, and Dave Greenshields team are going to have to produce a rousing display tomorrow if they are to go into the final day with any hope of victory.
That just about wraps it up for the day. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow at 10am sharp where we will be bringing you the Cricket Men’s 1sts, Hockey Men’s 1sts and who could forget the Ballroom Dancing. See-you in the morning. Dan.
Friday 8:15pm
York are winning 71-41 in the swimming, and looking on course to make it an almost perfect day for the home side. If anyone else fancies having a pint with me I’m gasping right now! Where are you Big John?
Friday 7:45pm
No news on the swimming as of yet. Will keep you posted though.
In other news York AU Pres Tom Moore didn’t react well to his counter-part Dave Greenshields saying that losing by over 20 points is all part of the Lancaster plan, not to worry though Tom, it looks like you may be in for a good few days.
Friday 7:15pm
York are running away with the Carter-James trophy at the moment, with only the Swimming left today York are leading 43.5-13.5 that’s a 30 point lead and way above the 20 point lead that Lancaster President Dave Greenshields apparently planned for.
Unfortunately it seems the alumni game has been cancelled - shame I was really looking forward to Greg Dyke running around in his shorts.
Friday 6:35pm
It’s all over in the cricket. Lancaster are bowled out for 216 with 4 overs to spare leaving York with a convincing 56 run victory. It was a long slog but it’s only worth the two points, but York are celebrating it like it’s worth 20.
Big shout out to Big John who just invited me out for a pint, I’ll accept but it’s going to have to be another time.
Friday 6:20pm
Lancaster are making a go of it, and are hanging in there on 216-9. They are now chasing 50 off 42 balls, can you feel the tension?
Friday 6:05pm
It’s all gone wrong for Lancaster, they are now facing a monumental task as two cheap wickets fall, leaving them on the brink at 183-8.
Friday, 5:50pm
The cricket game is really heating up now. Lancaster find themselves on 172-6 with 84 balls remaining requiring 95 to win. At this stage in the York innnings they had only lost two wickets, so Lancaster are now relying on a strong tail-end so see them through.
Friday, 5:30pm
Howdy everyone, Dan here taking you through until the bitter end today, which is expected to be around 8:30pm. Don’t even consider taking your eyes away from the computer this evening as it promises to be very eventful.
We are still waiting for the result in the cricket, where York are looking relatively comfortable currently, while at 7pm there is live commentry from the swimming and a special 5-a-side alumni tournament taking place in the Tent. Meanwhile we will start to see full match reports coming in from games which have happened during the day.
Friday, 5.10pm
Lancaster have lost four wickets now in four succession, and are currenty on 127 for 4 off 27 overs. This is roughly what York were on about this time, so looks like we’re in for a good finish.
News from the darts, where the women’s team have taken the first set.
Right, that’s it for me from now. I’m passing over to the sports editor, Daniel Whitehead, who will take you through the close of play today. Keep your comments coming in, as we look forward to a packed Saturday with a 117 points up for grab.
Friday, 4.40pm
Lancaster are picking up the pace in the cricket, moving on to 67 for no wickets off 15 overs. Our reporter at the game, Heidi Blake, is sounding a little nervous for the home team: apparently York’s fielding is “falling apart.” 266 is a decent score, but with their two openers still in place Lancaster must feel confident.
Friday, 4.25pm
The cricket is also well underway, with Lancaster 38 for no loss after 12 overs. They’re chasing 266 to take the 2 points. Expect an exciting finish at 22 Acres.
Friday, 4.20pm
A win for York at the ski event in Sheffield has added another four points for the home team. The Women’s team also won, although there weren’t any points up for grabs. York’s badminton success has also continued, with an 8-1 doubles win for Men’s 1st and a 7-2 win for the Women’s 1st doubles teams.
It also looks like the Futsal event may have to be cancelled, due to the slight inconvenience of the Lancaster team not turning up. They’re still hopeful though, although the match is not scheduled to carry any points.
Friday, 4.00pm
A big blow for York, as Lancaster win in the battle of the Ultimate Frisbee by 14 points to 12. A match report is soon to follow. This, combined with another win in the Rugby Union 7’s (Men’s 1sts, 5-45) means Lancaster are just 8 points behind.
Lots of ‘Come on York’ messages being sent in, and one rather cryptic one just saying “Hello rich”. A greeting to our esteemed President perhaps? Surely they could have just Facebooked him…
Friday, 3.55pm
York and Lancaster are currently trading blows: as soon as one team gain a victory, the other get the points straight back. Lancaster Women’s 1sts beat York in the Rugby 7’s by a massive 21-0. However the two points gained there were cancelled out by a win for York in the Indoor Hockey from the Men’s 1sts. Their 2-0 victory returns York’s 14 points lead.
What might be more worrying for York is their poor Rugby performance, which doesn’t bode well for the Rugby 15’s tomorrow and Sunday. 10 points hang on those games, and York need to improve on their 7’s performance.
We caught up with Lancaster AU President, Dave Greenshields, for a quick chat to see if he was downheartened. Apparently though, he predicted it all along: “We expected to be behind, and it’s conceivable that we could be losing by up to 20 points by tonight. However I’m not disheartened at all, as I know that Lancaster excel at traditional outside sports.”
Confident guy, but I guess we’ll have to wait to see whether his faith is misplaced.
Friday, 3.35pm
A strong squash performance from the Men’s 1sts see them win 5-0, only dropping one game in the entire tournament. Those 4 points will do nicely, opening up the gap for York once more.
Friday, 3.25pm
Phew, scores and results are coming in thick and fast now. Hopefully you should start to see more match reports appearing on the front page as well, and take a moment to click on the photo gallery as they’re being updated at an impressive rate of knots.
Lancaster have grabbed two points with an important win in the Women’s 1sts indoor hockey.
Meanwhile York are doing well in the Men’s and Women’s 1st Badminton competitions, 4-0 and 3-0 up respectively. Lancaster have the edge in the Ultimate Frisbee at half-time, winning 8-7, whilst York’s Rugby 7’s Women’s 1sts are losing 10-0.
Friday, 3.05pm
In the cricket, York’s Men’s 2nds lower order collapse was completed as first the captain Hunter was caught off Grub’s bowling by Foote after reaching 16, rapidly followed by Baxendale being bowled by Grub for 7. York’s innings came to an end as Fornear was run out for 4. York finished the innings all out for 266 in 49 overs.
In the Rugby 7’s, Lancaster are currently on top. Their Men’s 2nds won 24-0, and their Women’s 2nds won 5-0. However York Men’s 3rds won 10-5. Therefore Lancaster gain 2 points, while York get one. Apparently the Lancaster Rugby team have gone for a repeat of last year’s fashion statement, with peroxide dyed hair. Nice… A diversion tactic perhaps?
Friday, 2.45pm
Good and bad news for the athletes in York. In the badminton, York has taken a 2-0 lead in both the Men’s and the Women’s 1sts.
However, wickets continue to fall in the cricket. Emmerson was caught by Goodwin at deep square leg off Foote’s bowling for 22, then Foote got another wicket as Butterworth was caught by Long for 26. 45 overs have been bowled, and York are 245 for 7.
Friday, 2.30pm
We have our first match report in from yesterday’s victory in the Equestrian, courtesy of Venetia Rainey.
2 more wickets have fallen for York in the cricket. First of all, Child was caught by Hill off Scott’s bowling at midwicket for 37. Then Cooke was caught and bowled by Grub for 16. Currently we’re 219 for 5 off 42 overs.
Friday, 1.45pm
York Men’s 2nds have lost the Indoor Hockey 4-1, gaining Lancaster a vital point.
In the cricket, Hudson was bowled by Fernley just ten short of his century, leaving York on 160 for 2 off 33 overs. Lancaster sledging is starting to get a bit more vicious: the latest rallying call is “Come on lads, let’s shut these toffs up!” Is there a class divide dimension to the Roses? Can’t see it myself, but be interested to know people’s thoughts. Email to socs12@york.ac.uk.
Friday, 1.45pm
Yet more good news for York as the points total continue to rack up. News has reached Nouse Towers (or Grimston House, as it’s otherwise known) that the Men’s 2nds have prevailed in the squash. That’s another 2 points for York, and although it’s still very early Lancaster must be starting to get a little nervous.
Friday, 1.40pm
The Badminton Mixed and Men’s 2nds have finished completely, with both ending up 8-1 in favour of York. An emphatic victory therefore in the first games of the day which (fingers crossed) will bode well for the weekend.
In the cricket, York continues to build a strong partnership. The 3rd wicket stand has contributed 83 to the total, with York on 120 for 2 after 25 overs.
Friday, 1pm
Lancaster get on the board with their first points of the competition as the Women’s 2nds Indoor Hockey ends in a 1-1 draw. The half-point may not be much, but at least Dave Greenshields, the Lancs AU Pres, doesn’t have to look at a big fat zero anymore. Now it has a .5 to accompany it…
The cricket is now 93 for 2 off 20 overs, and again the run-rate has increased to 4.7 an over.
Only one match kicking off on the hour, with Mens 2nds Indoor Hockey fighting it out for one more point.
Friday, 12.30pm
Good news from the badminton as we take both the Mixed and the Men’s 2nds points, 4 and 2 respectively. York’s lead now stretches to 12 points without answer.
In other good news, in the cricket the run rate has increased to 4.2 an over. York are now 71 for 2 off 17 overs. Apparently the banter has started as well, with a Lancaster fielder on the boundary telling the York crowd to f*** off after some harsh words. Excitement…
Friday, 12.15pm
In the cricket, the Men’s 2nds cricket have just lost their second wicket. Lewin made 21 before being trapped lbw by Fernley. This leaves York on 37 for 2 after 10 overs; looks like they’re going to need to pick up the run rate a bit. They’re currently on 3.7 an over and at this rate they’ll make 185.
In the badminton York are currently 4 games up and only need one more game to claim the points. However Lancaster have just pulled a game back, but York still only need one more victory.
Friday, 12pm
The Men’s 2nds cricket has been going half an hour now, and the first wicket has fallen. York are batting, and Remington is out for 10, caught by Grubb, with Thompson bowling. York are 21-1 after 5 overs.
Matches are beginning to start all over campus now, with Women’s 2nds Indoor Hockey and Men’s 2nds Squash the latest sports to begin.
Friday, 11.30am
The home support has worked, and York has fought back to one set all. Looks like an exciting start to the day.
Friday, 11.25am
First update from the Badminton and it’s not good news for York. Lancaster has taken the first set in the Mixed 2nds and only need one more to claim the win in the first game. Slight confusion with the scoring system as the official Roses booklet scoring for Badminton seems to be wrong. Instead of 4 points for the Badminton Mixed 1sts and 2 for the Badminton Mixed 2nds, there is a Mixed game for 4 points and a Men’s 2nds for 2 points, each with 3 teams playing with each other. Anyway, hopefully the boisterous crowd, including the whole of the YUSU exec, can galvanise the York team.
Friday, 11am
And we’re off! Well technically we were off yesterday as the equestrian team landed the first blow for York, leaving us 6-0 up at this early stage. But today sees the first day of full action, with 59 points up for grabs. Remember both York and Lancaster are aiming to hit the 126 point mark which will see them claim the Carter-Jones trophy.
My name’s Toby Green and I’ll be keeping you up to date for this first stint of Nouse’s live coverage. With reports from up to 70 games coming in during the weekend, this will be the best way to keep up with how Roses 2007 is developing, apart from being there of course.
If you want to get in contact with us then email in to socs12@york.ac.uk. We also receive any texts sent to the AU: text Roses followed by your message to 80010. And amidst all the reports and photos being updated on the website on the weekend, me and the Roses commentary team will try and bring you some of the flavour of the competition as well as latest scores during the matches.
The Badminton Mixed 1sts and 2nds have just kicked off in the main hall, with 6 points available between them. Can Tom Moore bring back the Roses for York? We’re about to find out…

Big John
This commentary is awesome. Dan, you sound like my kind of guy. Fancy a beer some time?
Heidi
Dan would love to have a beer with you, Big John. He finishes his stint in the commentary vestibule at 7pm - why don’t you swing by the Nouse office and pick him up?
Simon Not Likely
These Lancy fellows are as common as muck.
