Live Commentary

Saturday 12:00am

Finally, the final result of the day reaches us here in the office. We’ve hardly been twiddling our thumbs, as we do have an edition to produce but just to let you know the Men’s Pool team won comfortably, finishing 8-1.

In summary, the day was one of joy and tears for both sides as neither really took control of the battle. York are still in a convincing position entering the final day, however tough games in the football and rugby could lead to it going right down to the wire.

Concluding, while most of you lucky bastards are now enjoying yourselves at the Roses Ball, thankfully I won’t have a massive migraine in the morning as I’m off to bed. Night.

Saturday 10:20pm

We’re really sending in the updates thick and fast this evening, you must be impressed. The Women’s pool just finished with a nail-biting tie-break which York won to claim the match and the points 5-4. Apparently the Men are still playing, I’ll try and write the next entry before you all go to bed.

Saturday 8.40pm

The Men’s tennis results have just come in with York winning 8-7 overall in both the singles and doubles tournaments. The pool tournament is now underway at the Roses Ball, we’ve got our dedicated team of reporters down there bringing you the latest results, gossip and sleaze.

Saturday 6.40pm

Lancaster have also taken the four points in the Men’s canoe polo, winning 3 points to one.

The commentary will be taking a short break as the matches pause until the evening, but Tom Moore shouldn’t be too unduly worried and I’m sure he will enjoy his night.

Saturday 6.10pm

And the cricket is all over. Lancaster have been bowled out for 144, meaning York win by a massive 136 runs.

However York have lost in the Women’s volleyball 3 sets to nil, and the Women’s canoe polo has ended in a 1-1 draw. Match reports to follow on both these games.

Only two more events are set to start this evening, with both the Men’s and the Women’s teams competing at Pool. It’s taking place during the Roses ball, so should be an interesting atmosphere.

Saturday 5.55pm

Lacrosse mens 1sts

Heya guys, it’s Toby Green here back from enjoying a couple of hours in the sun. Sights we’ve seen today include old SU Pres Micky Armstrong taking a break from Tesco’s, current SU Pres Rich Croker riding a girl’s bike and a naked Lancasterian by the rugby pitch that looked like a peroxide blonde baby.

In the Fencing the Men’s 1sts have lost with the foil, going down 33-45, but there are still two swords remaining. Match reports have also just come in from an exciting day of hockey.

Another wicket has fallen in the cricket. Childs has been caught behind for 9 off Belk’s bowling. The score therefore stands at 140-8, and the points look all but guaranteed for the home team.

York are currently 22 points ahead, which would be a decent result to end the day on.

Saturday 5.30pm

Lancaster is 122 for 7 after 35 overs, Stockhill having been caught for 27 off the bowling of Smith.

Saturday 5.20pm

There’s a wicket in the cricket (ho ho) as Smith traps Long LBW for 21. This is rapidly followed by a shambolic run-out and Brooke makes the not-so-long walk back to the pavilion with only 1 run to his name. After 32 economical overs from York’s bowlers, Lancaster are 106 for 5 and looking beaten.

In the Volleyball, York Women’s 1sts are 2-0 down.

Saturday 5.05pm

In the cricket, Gledhill is out caught and bowled by Hudson on 40. Lancaster are now 77 for 4 off 24 overs. The run rate has increased slightly to 3.2, but Lancaster need some big hits if they intend to get close to York’s total of 279.

The Rugby finished with a Lancaster win, 19 - 13. Oh well, whatever, nevermind, because York’s overall score has increased to 80, with Lancaster trailing on 56. With any luck we’ll hold down our lead till the end of the day, and the Lancs players will get sufficiently trashed at the Roses ball tonight to put themselves well and truly out of commission.

If anyone can muster a more hackneyed pop-culture reference than the above, I’ll personally buy them a pint…

Saturday 4. 45pm

The hockey score is 2-0 to York at full time. ‘That was awesome’ says our man on the sideline.

In the cricket, Lancaster have lost another wicket. Whiteman is out for 30 after a partnership of 66, and the score is now 68 for 3 off 20 overs. Apparently the outfield is a bit muddy, with the result that the players now have ‘big brown streaks all over their arses’. There’s an edifying image if ever there was one.

Saturday 4. 40pm

Another GOAL for York in the hockey! A beast of a shot from James Hume takes the score to 2-0 to York. The Lancaster crowd on the sideline have quietened down a bit now, and the York supporters are gaining in cheer, which is just the way it should be.

Saturday 4. 25pm

GOAL! Ben Griffiths scores in the hockey after a beautiful run by Ally Morgan. York is 1-0 up!

The news from the Men’s Rugby 2nds game is less joy-inducing: Lancaster are 19-13 up with 15 minutes to go.

Saturday 4.20pm

The signs of strain are beginning to show on the familiar if now somewhat haggard countenance of our beloved AU President Tom Moore, I’m told. It seems he hasn’t been keeping track of the score, and visibly paled when informed of Lancaster’s sudden surge on points by one of our reporters on the fields. Having gathered himself, he apparently claimed to have ‘expected this all along’ and to have ‘planned for this sort of thing’. Let’s wait and see what he’s got up his sleeve then, shall we?

I’m told Lancaster have just fluffed an excellent chance at a goal in the hockey, and the score remains 0-0. Two Lancaster players and York’s Alex Topsfield have been given yellow cards for backchatting the referee. Naughty boys.

Saturday 4.10pm

York has made a bit of much needed progress, with the total score now standing at 66.5 - 50 to us.

The atmosphere at the hockey is apparently tense, as the teams return 0-0 after half-time. Lancaster are putting the pressure on, and the play is focusing in the York half, but York’s defense remains strong by all accounts.

The York Men’s 2nds have achieved a much needed win in the fencing, thrashing Lancaster 135-75. Disappointingly, the Women’s 2nds lost to Lancaster, who finished 135-90. Let’s draw a veil over that, shall we?

Lancaster are still ahead in the Rugby: the score now stands at 16-10. At least York’s Men’s 2nds are staving off the kind of thorough beating our Women’s 1sts underwent earlier in the day. Let’s thank the god of sport for small mercies.

In the cricket, Lancaster has struggled to 23 for 2 after 10 overs, surviving a dropped catch and a big shout for LBW. They’ll need to pick up their run rate considerably if they intend to get anywhere near our total, as the current 2.2 will only make them 110 runs off 50 overs.

Saturday 3.55pm

The overall score is getting a bit close for comfort, with Lancaster only 11 points behind York’s 58.5. I hear that the Lancaster crowd are getting increasingly rowdy on the sidelines, while the York contingent is growing ever quieter. We need some decisive victories this afternoon to galvanise York’s spirits and get this tournament back on track for the home side.

Play in the hockey is pretty even, with good performances on both sides.

Saturday 3.45pm

In the hockey, I’m told York have had five decent runs on the goal to Lancaster’s paltry one, despite the beating sun. Billy Walsh is displaying exemplary technique. There’s no goal as yet, but it seems it’s only a matter of time.

News has just come in that that the netball has ended disappointingly for York, with a Lancaster win 37-32.

Saturday 3.35pm

The hockey Men’s 1sts game has started and I’m told play has been frenetic from the outset. York are immediately on the offensive, putting some much needed pressure on their opponents.

The netball has taken a turn for the worse for York, with Lancaster now leading 29-25.

In the cricket, Lancaster are out to bat and they are already 2 for 2. York have struck early with both Lancaster opening batsmen Gryal and Stevens bowled clean in the first 2 overs.

In the tennis, York Women’s 1sts have lost the doubles sets 3-0. However, York won the singles match with 6-1 in the first set and 6-4 in the second.

Saturday 3.20pm

In the cricket, the York Men’s 1sts have been bowled all out by Lancaster for 279. The last wicket fell from the last ball of the innings. Lancaster will come out to bat after lunch. Tom Henry of the York team said ‘The innings was okay. We lost our way a bit in the middle, but we got back on track. 279 is defendable, but 300 would have been better.’

The Women’s rugby game has ended 42-0 to Lancaster at full time. A member of the York men’s team was heard to describe the game as ‘a competition between two big, fat, ugly sets of girls’. How charming these rugby types are.

Lancaster Men’s 3rds won the football 2-1. They celebrated their victory by running to the far end of pitch and jumping on top of each other. If they keep up their high spirits, with any luck they’ll sprain something.

The Men’s 2nds Rugby Union game has started, and the Lancaster team is already 7-0 up after 5 minutes. According to our man on the pitch they are twice the size of our lads, though perhaps their threatening appearance is lessened by the fact they have all got peroxide blonde hair.

In the netball, the score is now 16-11 to York after York’s new shooter scored 3 in 5 minutes.

Saturday 3.00pm

Good afternoon campers, I’m Heidi Blake and I’ll be taking you through the next few hours of Roses action.

It’s bad news to start, I’m afraid: the Rugby Union Women’s 1sts are losing heavily with zero points in the second half of the game to Lancaster’s 32. This follows the spirit-crushing defeat of York Men’s Rugby League team this morning who lost by 40 points. Apparently the Lancaster rugby contingent aren’t suffering as heavily as might be expected from last night’s highly vocal drunken excesses.

York’s and Lancaster’s Men’s 3rds are battling it out 1-1 in the football. Word from the pitch is that a scuffle has just broken out between several of the players, but no-one’s been sent off as yet.

The hockey has ended 4-1 to Lancaster despite some valiant defense action from York at the end of the match.

Better news from the fencing hall, where York Men’s 2nds are trouncing their opponents 90-54, with one sword left to fight with. The women’s team are doing less well, with only 66 points to Lancaster’s 90.

In the netball women’s 1sts, York are leading 10-9.

Saturday 2.35pm

Excitement in the Karate. The Lancaster team have won the fighting, and an ambulance has arrived for one of the men’s team.

In the Tennis Women’s 1sts doubles, Lauren Crawley and Rosie Brown have just lost to Lancaster’s Bird and Bowker. Sloppy play from the York team, and they’re looking pretty disheartened.

A York goal in the Hockey is quickly answered by Lancaster, who are now 3-1 up. And in the netball Lancaster are dominating, going 3-0 up after just 5 minutes.

Saturday 2.25pm

Ballroom dancing results hot in, and Lancaster prevailed with a slight advantage taking 2.5 of the 4 points available.

In the Men’s 2nd hockey, Lancaster have scored 10 minutes in from a short corner. However possession is fairly equal. Lancaster have come back strong in the Lacrosse women’s 1st as well, and now lead 5-2 at the start of the 4th quarter.

Wickets are falling in the cricket, as York are now on 226 for 5.

Saturday 1.55pm

The results have come in from the Canoe event at Teeside Whitewater Course, with the 4 points being shared between the sides. York Women’s took their points, while the Men’s went down to a strong Lancaster side.

In the Netball Women’s 2nds York are up 21 points to 9 at halftime.

Saturday 1.35pm

York have moved on to 150-2 after just having lost Matt Belk, who was stumped on 30.

Our first update from the Karate comes courtesy of Jenny. At the moment both York and Lancaster have gained a point, the Men’s team for York and the Women’s team for Lancaster. They’ve just done the sequences, and now they’re gonna fight. Fight fight fight! (That may not actually a fair representation of the crowd, but I hope it is.)

The Men’s 2nds hockey has also finished, and York have won 4-0. That’s two more points for us.

So come on then, do we think York will have it wrapped up by the end of today? Or might Tom Moore be sleeping a bit more uneasily tonight than he did last night?

Saturday 1.15pm

Alrighty kids, hows it going? It’s Toby Green here again taking you over lunchtime, although I will (hopefully) be replaced around 3pm as I’ve decided I would like to experience a match from Roses away from a computer screen.

Anyway, let’s see how today’s shaping up. It’s been a pretty strong start for Lancaster, with decisive victories in Trampolining, Netball and Hockey amongst the points they’ve racked up today. Perhaps currently the most exciting match is the Women’s 1sts Lacrosse down at 22 Acres. 4 points up for grabs, and York are 2-0 up. According to Dan, who’s at the game, the atmosphere is “pretty noisy.” It’s almost as if you were there…

Also bad news for York in the Rugby League. The home side is 40 points down with no answer, with most of our players on the sidelines getting patched up.

In the cricket, the runs are drying up. Nick Hudson has reached his 50, and the next ball Nick Guest, the Lancaster bowler, had to retire injured after aggravatng a knee injury.

Matches that started on the hour included Table Tennis, Women’s 2nds Netball and the Fencing competition.

Saturday 12:49pm

York pull ahead to 3-0 in the Men’s Hockey 2nds, and we finally have those tennis scores through:
York’s C. Willis and L. Cockbil thrashed Lancaster’s T.Osborne and L.Taylor 6-1, 6-2.

This is my last post for now, I’m off to cover Karate. Toby will be taking over. Try not to miss me too much.

Saturday 12:45pm

The trampolining has ended with a decisive victory for Lancaster, leaving them to collect all the points from this event. The final score was York 149.8 and Lancaster 151.3. In other news Nick Vanner has been bowled out in the cricket, leaving the cricket score at 102 for 1 at the present time. In the Tennis Mixed Doubles, York has 2 points and Lancaster 1. Game and Set scores to follow.

Saturday 12:25pm

Further cricket news and Nick Vanner has scored 50, bringing the score to 91 for 0. The Rugby League has begun, more news on that shortly, and finally the Men’s Indoor Football 1sts have finished up 2-2, with the 2nds dominated by York after winning 10-4. This brings the overall points score to York 50.5 - Lancaster 17.5. In other words, Lancaster are flagging badly as York race ahead to what looks to be a promising afternoon.

Saturday 11:49am

Cricket news: York won the toss and opted to bat, and after 20 minutes the score is 25 - 0 after 4 overs. We’ll be keeping a close eye, so keep checking back.

Saturday 11:43am

Dan has gone to check up on all the events, so it’s Jenny O’Mahony bringing you updates on all the Roses action. In the Women’s Hockey 2nds, Lancaster are leading 2-1. It’s quite a different story over at Indoor Football though, with the score currently at 7-2 in York’s favour, with an amazing hat-trick scored from our very own AU President Tom Moore. That match has also seen a player sent off from each of the two teams for bad behaviour. Will keep you posted on all these stories in the coming minutes.

Saturday 11:00am

The fixtures are starting thick and fast now all over campus. Indoor football, netball and women’s hockey have now begun. We’ll bring you updates from around the events as soon as we get them.

Saturday 10:35am

Not much to report so far. The canoeing, trampolining and mixed tennis are all underway, unfortunately the canoeing is taking place at Teeside Whitewater Course rather than on our University’s own lake. Shame.

Saturday 9:58am

Good morning to all you early birds. This is Daniel Whitehead seeing you through your Weetabix and orange juice this Saturday morning.

For all of you who missed yesterday’s action, York took a convincing lead over Lancaster thanks to impressive displays from the squash, badminton and skiing teams, coming into the second day with a 34 point lead. Today’s highlights include the cricket, tennis and hockey in what promises to be an eventful day. Starting at 10am with canoeing and trampolining.

As yesterday, please send in your comments whether it’s on the state of the opposition, your thoughts on a controversial decision or you just want to ask me out for a beer.

Wow, this is exciting! Almost like being there, but without having to go out in the cold or stop writing my report (yeah, I know…).

Hmmm… maybe you should syndicate Twitter feeds from your reporters on the scene for real up to the minute live action. Now that would be really amazing. (Oh, just me then?)
