York 1 - Lancaster 4

On a hot Saturday afternoon, York’s Women’s 1sts went down 4-1 in a tough game on the hockey pitch.

The match started off slowly and the teams were evenly matched as the possession was shared between the two sides.

However Lancaster made the breakthrough 10 minutes in as Lancaster’s aggressive but effective number 8 flicked the ball into the goal for an early lead. York immediately counterattacked, but failed to produce any end result, and 18 minutes later Lancaster’s number 8 scored again to make it 2-0.

The second half saw two ambitious attacks by York barely repelled, and a bad Lancaster tackle in the D resulted in a York goal by penalty.

York’s revival was short-lived, as a swift Lancaster counterattack took the score to 3-1. Doubts were raised about the legality of this goal, with York’s captain saying that the referee had missed the fact that Lancaster’s player had not touched the ball inside the D.

Lancaster’s number 8 completed her hat-trick with 5 minutes of play left to seal York’s fate.
