Time: Friday 12.00
Location: Squash Courts
Points: York 2

York Men’s 2nds kicked off this year’s round of squash ties in emphatic fashion, dominating from start to finish to comfortably beat Lancaster 5-0.

In fact, York were so dominant that they did not even drop a game in any of the matches, completing a clean sweep of 3-0 whitewashes. With two matches happening simultaneously on the squash courts, the small crowd of mostly York supporters rushed back and forth between the two, eager not to miss a crucial play or particular piece of skill.

For most of the tie, all the skill was emanating from the York side, with Matt Twaddle quickly overcoming his opponent 9-1, 9-4, 9-1, barely pausing for breath as he comfortably pulled away. In fact, such was the speed of his victory that the third match that followed his was well into its swing by the time that match five reached its conclusion. Match five promised early on to be a much tighter affair, with both players producing high quality squash to take game one to a tense conclusion. Tom Davenhill won through for York with a score of 10-9 and proceeded to take the match 3-0 at a canter.

The highlight of match three, which turned out to be the deciding match of the tie, was during the second game. After losing the first game, Jamie White had pulled away 2-8 for Lancaster and was looking in control. However, Joe Patterson seemed to move his game up a couple of gears and completed a remarkable comeback by taking the game 10-8, much to the delight of the York faithful. The ascendancy he gained in that game allowed him to take the third game 9-0, completing a run of 17 unanswered points and ending the tie as a contest with York leading 3-0 with two to play.

To complete the rout, York finished off the final two matches to love to begin the Roses squash fixtures in style.
