Although expectations were high for York’s Women’s Indoor Hockey 1sts, the outcome was disappointing in a match for the most part dominated by Lancaster.
With York taking the first push-back and immediately forcing a penalty corner in Lancaster’s circle, there was hope of an early York goal, yet the away team reposed the ball and exhibited their impressive attack by midfielder Fran O’Neill scoring within the first two minutes. Lancaster continued to test their opposition’s defensive limits with play remaining in the home team’s half.
Numerous fierce shots at goal were permitted by Captain Lindsey Walker and fellow defenders Jamie Unsworth and Gemma Cheney who were on poor form throughout the match. Although York benefited from several free hits, they were unable to capitalise from these and conceded another goal by Wore to bring the score up to 2-0 to Lancaster.
Despite their shoddy defence, York’s front-line exhibited grim determination and team work as they increased their possession of the ball and drove some close shots at the Lancaster goal keeper. Following a stint of four penalty corners against the away team, in the last couple of minutes of the first half attacker Jo Carter managed to force the ball into the back of the net, reducing Lancaster’s lead to 2-1.
The second half indicated a change in pace and pressure on the part of the home team. A Lancaster goal scored by Hannah Bowden at the beginning was followed by the chance of a penalty for York, which was unluckily missed by Carter. Unwilling to admit defeat the side continued to drive forward, succeeding with a goal by Pisesky.
The end of the match saw York continually forcing penalty corners yet to no gain, as they were unable to offer any profitable shots at the goal and break through Lancaster’s defence.
