York 2 - Lancaster 0

The York Men’s 1st team maintained their high standard this season with a steady and fast-paced performance against Lancaster, and an easy victory of 2-0.

Lancaster tried to take control at the beginning, with Jack Keating’s attempt at an early shot at goal. In spite of this promising start, Lancaster were unable to extend this first burst of attack, with play becoming progressively more even in possession between the two teams.

York responded with a penalty corner and forceful shot at goal by Ben Griffiths which threatened to alter the score. Lancaster’s Michael Bowler intercepted and took a fun up the pitch yet a lack of support from his team mates and the powerful defence of backs Dan
Westley and Andy Hook prevented him from scoring.

Play became dominated by York’s front-line as the match approached half time, with Lancaster’s goal keeper Dave Bayliss being severely tested and found wanting by Griffiths’ goal in the fifteenth minute. Lancaster’s own attempts at testing the opposition proved less successful in a brilliant save by keeper Will Giblaud.

The second half enabled Lancaster to demonstrate their sound defence against a series of attacks by a somewhat disjointed York front-line. Lancaster was reduced to five players by the temporary suspension of Captain James Lloyd from a yellow card yet York took no advantage of their numerical advantage, hitting several shots at goal but to no avail.

Attempts by Lancaster to fight back proved York’s defence, driven to a large extent by the fine performance of Westley, to be impenetrable. Lancaster’s, on the other hand, was shown to be fallible, with the concession of Olli Hughes’ goal in the thirty-sixth minute of play. Despite the score achieved by the team as a whole, it was York’s defence that really excelled, with Westley acting as an integral feature of their win over Lancaster.
