First Day Report

A domineering performance from York University saw them cruise into a 34 point lead over Lancaster after the opening day of Roses 2007.

Going into the day with a six point cushion from Thursday’s Equestrian, York never looked like they were under any pressure with impressive performances from the squash, badminton and skiing teams.

The day began in the main hall as the mixed badminton teams played out a nervy encounter for the first points of the day. However, nerves were soon calmed by solid performances from all involved as they claimed victory by eight sets to one. Elsewhere, Lancaster were finding it difficult to keep up with the scoring rate as York flourished in the Squash and started promisingly in the cricket.

Mid-afternoon saw a minor fight-back from Lancaster, as the Rugby 7’s tournament proved to be a disastrous one for York, losing four of the five fixtures. But it was not to be for Greenshield’s men as York ended the day with victories in the cricket, darts, skiing and swimming.

Speaking at the end of the day Tom Moore said he was “delighted” by the teams progress and “couldn’t ask for anything better” on the first day. Meanwhile, Dave Greenshields was in a more reflective mood stating that he was prepared for Friday being a poor day, and promising a fightback over the Bank Holiday weekend, expecting the team to excel in the hockey, football and rugby union.
