Cardboard Radio, Fibbers, 9/6/06

Yes, I too thought my dreams of ever frolicking in York to R&B music that actually stands for Rhythm & Blues, not Ringtones & Bling, had faded into our streets’ medallion-studded night. However, hope is to be found in the shape of Cardboard Radio, who will willingly mop up the blood from any battered ears that have taken too much Gallery-shaped abuse. Smouldering with seducing riffs, gut-caressing drums and looks to boot, the Cardies make a damn good clatter for three raggedy-assed youngsters. At the helm of this progressive-blues steam monster is the effortlessly charismatic Andy Gaines, whose visceral Yorkshire vocals sit neatly on top of his stomping electric pipe-cleaners. The highlight of their short, but energy-crammed set is their new single ‘different like everybody else’ – a sweaty affair, teeming with oh so true lyrics, teasing guitars and mullet-battering stick action. The fact that this band is erupting with talent and charisma, and has every pair of spray-on-jeans rattling the poor floor of Fibbers, suggests that this best kept secret of the North is soon to be unleashed.
