Gradball details releases for 2006 flagship event

DETAILS OF THIS year’s Gradball have been exclusively revealed by the SU Services Officer, complete with a number of drastic changes from previous years.

After a great deal of planning the date for the event, which often proves controversial, has been set for the 28th June. This is the Wednesday of Week Ten in the summer term.

In the past, Gradball has been held after term has finished and is usually in, or immediately before, graduation week. This has resulted in students having to come to York several times, or in the worst case, having to get up the morning after for their Degree day.

The date chosen two years ago was considered a more amenable one, because the then Services Officer, Chris Osbourne, tried to time it for when most students still had their house.

Nat Thwaites-MacGowan, the current SU Services officer has said: “What I’ve tried to do is make sure that people don’t have to come back to York twice, and both times have to get a hotel.” Instead the new date for this year should mean that most people will still have their student houses when the event is held.

Thwaites-MacGowan has also confirmed that the SU are trying to make after dinner tickets available for the event. This could help to dramatically cut the cost of one of the most expensive SU events. Last year, the £75 tickets were deemed too expensive and it even discouraged some students from attending. Aaron Cartwright said: “I just couldn’t have afforded to go, even if I wanted to.”

The venue has also been confirmed as the York Racecourse, which means that the same amount of space and tickets will be available as previous years.

Act bookings for this year are yet to be confirmed.
