Is that essential post-ziggy’s takeaway a thing of the past?
Police and Councillors in York are clamping down on violence in York’s late night takeaways. The issue has arisen due to the Licensing Act which came in to force on 24th November giving the council stricter controls over those who breach their contracts.
A popular spot for students, many takeaway outlets attract drunk, loud and often violent and abusive customers. Councillors are concerned about the level of noise and disturbance and those establishments that breach the conditions may be in risk of losing their license.
Councillors have called for stricter control over those outlets who do not stick to the conditions within their license. As a results of this members of the city’s Scrutiny Management Committee have recently approved plans for Takeaway Patrols to visit those establishments who are attracting violence and noise. Marked and unmarked officers are to visit takeaways within the City investigating those that have been reported as trouble spots.
Clearly in favour of the council’s new clampdown a popular takeaway said, “We do have some arguments, we just don’t want any trouble, that’s what we support.” Like everywhere else he just wants to be student friendly, “we’re happy to see students, their less trouble than anyone else.”
Under the new scheme landlords can face a fine of up to £20,000 or six months in prison if their establishment is the scene of continued incidents of violence and noise. Let’s hope local residents and party go-ers will appreciate this when making their way home.
