Paris riots prompt RAG charity hitch move to Edinburgh
HE OUTBREAK OF rioting in France has led to the postponement of the RAG hitch to Paris in Week Seven and a move to Edinburgh.
The move has meant that places have been slashed with only 33 places available compared with the 52 places on the cancelled trip.
The RAG President, Jaimal Shah admitted that the Edinburgh trip “won’t make nearly as much money for charity” as a result of the reduction in places.
The RAG President said that the committee had acted on warnings from the university’s health and safety officer that the RAG committee would be held accountable if the safety of the volunteers was compromised. Shah said he was “fairly optimistic” that the proposed
Edinburgh trip, at the reduced cost of £70, would be a success and that he had already received letters of support from members.
Some volunteers were not happy with the way inwhich the RAG hitch move was treated, and one member spoke of a “stream of incomprehensible emails over 3 days”.
Volunteer, Lisa Roup, questioned whether Paris should have been cancelled, saying “it was only advice from the Health and Safety Officer, not an instruction”. Roup said “Paris would have been more of a challenge, and I would have raised more funds”.
