Enough of what our writers and editors have to say, we sent reporters to find out what York students think of today’s issues
1. What do you think of uni investment in the arms trade?
2. Will late licenses reduce students’ binge drinking?
3. What impressions of campus were you given by the prospectus?
4. How will you be spending Freshers week?
Name: George Gibson
College: Goodricke
Course: Politics
Year: 4th Year
1. I had no awareness of this investment until now and couldn’t comment.
2. Negligibly. It will just mean people won’t have to go back and drink in their houses at 11pm when the pubs would all shut up.
3. They’re very adept at emphasising good points, like academic record, over facilities, which aren’t so good.
4. Woking for my degree, playing hockey and the odd event on campus.
Name: Malati Singh
College: Halifax
Course: Social Science and Crime
Year: 3rd Year
1. I wasn’t aware of this investment but it doesn’t sound very ethical to me.
2. Maybe people won’t drink so much. Late licensed events are good, but they take a lot of work.
3. My year’s prospectus made clear which colleges did and did not have certain facilities. It had lots of pictures of Heslington Hall.
4. Looking after all the overseas students coming to Halifax.
Name: Ian McKellow
College: Halifax
Course: Medecine
Year: 1st Year
1. I admire the university’s financial ambition in choosing to invest in the arms trade.
2. We definitely should have lots of late licensed events – but they its not very likely they’ll help to reduce binge drinking.
3. I liked the look of the campus from the prospectus and I found it even better when I arrived.
4. I will spend Freshers week Getting mortal, seeing some bands and making friends.
