Star Letter: Drink Binge

I am pleased that the university is finally taking a responsible attitude towards binge drinking. Not only have they increased drinks prices on campus to limit the amount of alcohol students can afford to buy but they are even facing difficulties over the application for a new license.

With fewer late licenses campus wide the temptation for students to binge would be removed. As would the students themselves, from already half-empty campus bars, to town venues more favorable for filling-up.

It is reassuring that authorities are so interested in our leisure habits, to the point of curtailing them, as no one is going to look after us when we’re alcoholics.

Perhaps it is time to do away withvending machines from campus as well, thus reducing a student’s intake of sweets and fizzy drinks. Chips and burgers off the menu, following our juniors’ example, too, would surely lead to healthier lifestyle choices being made by the majority.

Like the kids, we might make a fuss to begin with, but if enticed by enough alternatives, or bribes - tofu treats or ipods - we should all be happier and healthier.
