New season promising plenty for entertaining Minstermen

Last week saw the ten year anniversary of York City’s famous 3-0 victory over Manchester United in the league cup at Old Trafford, and after a decade which has held very few fond memories, York’s promising start to this season’s campaign has finally brought some optimism back to KitKat Crescent.

City’s 4-2 home victory over Exeter City last week was seen by the Minstermen’s biggest crowd of the season with attendances consistently rising since the opening day of the season. “Now their little football team is giving them a bit of entertainment,” said boss Billy McEwan, adding that “word is getting round that we have got a good little outfit.”

This is certainly looking to be the case with York unbeaten at home and lying third in the Nationwide Conference table just two points behind leaders Grays Athletic. In fact this impressive start might have been even better with last minute goals causing York to drop points on four occasions already, including a last minute equaliser on Saturday away at Gravesend.

Summer signing Clayton Donaldson scored his seventh goal in eight games in this match, and the 21-year-old has been one of the stars for the Minstermen, proving that he not only has the capacity to score goals himself but provide for his team-mates as well. He is certainly proving to be one of the pieces that was missing from last seasons jigsaw with York already on 26 goals this year having finished on just 37 for the whole season in 2004/5.

Indeed the disappointment of last years final standing of seventeenth, having diced with relegation for much of the season, seems to be far from the memory of buoyant City fans at the moment, but McEwan is typically refusing to get carried away. “There’s still a lot to come out of this side because there’s still things not right that can be worked on.”

His meticulous approach ensured that York made it to safety last season when he took over in February and it looks as if this same approach could finally be bringing York City some success so that in ten years time their fans might also be celebrating the anniversary of a famous promotion
