Gallery and Toffs to get 4am licences

THE TWO BIGGEST clubs in York have been given permission to extend their opening hours.

Despite a negative response from local residents, The Gallery and Toffs have been given a licence to open until 4 am, seven nights a week. The owners of both, Luminar have promised to bring in extra security measures to reduce the disruption caused by late night revellers.

Both will employ specially trained marshalls who will wear fluorescent jackets and quietly disperse the crowds that usually gather at closing time. Outside Toffs they will also police Barker Lane, discouraging cars from driving down the street which many late night drinkers use.

The Gallery, in conjunction with residents, have produced a ‘Neighbour’s Charter’ including information on how to contact the manager in cases of disruption.

The objections have been led by the Venerable Richard Seek, Archdeacon of York, who called the decision “detrimental” to the community. However Toffs manager Ed Gallagher, who said he was “delighted” with the decision, believes that drinking habits will not significantly change and that it may not open until 4 am every day.

“The street marshalls will make a massive difference.” Other restrictions include them not being allowed to serve drinks after 3.30 am and admissions won’t be allowed after 1.30 am.

Two smaller bars, Nexus and MacMillans, have also been given a licence to stay open until 3.30 am on the weekends.

I heard the Conservative’s are slagging of late licences. Most people at uni like a drink and a good time. I heard the tories are refusing to take part in licensing hearings around the country - this includes back home in East Anglia. They’ve got a cheeck to then slag off licenses if they don’t take part.
