York pubs set to shun new 24 hour licenses

ALL NIGHT PUB drinking is unlikely to become a reality in York, as no premises have expressed formal interest in 24 hour licensing.

A recent national survey did reveal that while none of the town’s pubs are tempted by the 24 hour licensing, many will apply to serve drinks until 1am, 2am and 3am.

Paul Schaggen, manager of the Charles XII, one of the most popular student pubs, remarked “24 hour licensing was not a feasible option in a residential area.” It appears the decision to apply for licences only up until 3am may be an attempt to please both locals and students.

Many argue that extending licence hours will encourage even greater binge-drinking. However Culture Minister Richard Caborn claims enabling pubs to choose their hours prevents drinkers all spilling onto the streets at the same time.

Many students are dismayed that none of the pubs are applying for a 24 hour licence. First year, Anna Simms, says, “It’s a shame because after the pubs close there are really only a few places to go. Extending the hours might encourage a slightly more mature drinking culture and a more diverse going-out scene.”
