The Rise of the Raj, Micklegate
Situated at the top of Micklegate by the fabulous hole that is Ziggy’s lies the Rise of the Raj. Why? Why not, curry’s always good. How Good? Well, with a decent range of beer including those seasoned cultural favourites Fosters and Kingfisher it doesn’t blow the doors off but you do know that what you’re getting should be ok.
Naturally popodoms are aplenty with a classic array of dips I won’t even try and guess at naming. The obvious challenge for you curry connoisseurs is the phall. I have known people near pass out from the pure hotness of this dish which I am reliably informed is one all of us should try, although the bloke was crouched over a toilet at the time. Don’t believe me, try it!!
For those normal(ish) people out there, the standard range of curry is of a good size, from korma to hot stuff, with all the dishes you would expect for a curry house in the heart of upmarket York. The food is always served at a manageable temperature and they don’t hold back on the sauce. As with any curry the garlic naan is recommended and you won’t end up smelling of it for weeks, but remember the meal comes without rice so you should order it separately. A generally acceptable restaurant and one that I have been back to on a few occasions with friendly waiters, good music, and only very occasionally something you never ordered appearing on the bill!
