Rilo Kiley, ‘More Adventurous’
Rilo Kiley, a band formed in 1998 in Los Angeles, released their third album More Adventurous this year, a record with a distinctively Californian alt-pop style, following their first two releases Take-Offs and Landings and The Execution of all Things.
More Adventurous is a lush and layered album with undertones of deep-south American country infused with the wistful melancholy of Dawson’s Creek. The album deals with the themes of unrequited love and heartbreak with a sense of optimism through the sanguine guitar licks, pop melodies and Jenny Lewis’ uplifting and lively, upbeat vocals.
More Adventurous shifts between different musical styles with every turn; from the minimalist Ripcord, a song in the style of The White Stripes that sounds like it was recorded with a dictaphone in a small garden shed, to the pop stylings of Portions for Foxes and I Never, which has echoes of a Vonda Shepard ballad. Love and War marks another departure in the album, with synths and hints of electronica, and It’s a Hit takes the album in another direction, with what sounds like a notso- subtle indictment of everyone’s favourite world leader, “Any chimp can play human for a day… and run for office on election day.”
The album has a refreshing feel to it; there is an honesty and conviction here that comes through in all of the songs and makes More Adventurous a pleasant and enjoyable musical experience. The album sounds like the soundtrack to pretty much any romantic comedy you can think of… so probably worth a listen for any Bridget Jones fans as well.
