Harkers, St Helen’s Square

I am aware that York is most famous for having a pub on every street. However, can I really be the only one at a loose end as to where to go on my Saturday nights? Fed up with the constant stream of rowdy chavs one must compete with to actually find floor space in the Nag’s Head to make the triples-for-singles offer worthwhile, I decided to take my drinking cap further afield. The only problem was that I just couldn’t think of anywhere in York I hadn’t already been.

Harkers is the answer. Just think how many students have been scared away by the classy and Lendel Cellars to drown their sorrows. The proximity to pretentious but highly townie bars such as Bar 38 also doesn’t do much to help the “upone’s- own-arse” appearance.

But do not despair! Just take the initiative and actually enter Harkers. With competitive prices and a nice laid back atmosphere, you can be sure you’ll have a great night out without breaking the bank. There is a pool table and also a non-smoking area for all those irritating girlies who don’t want their hair (which they’ve just spent about two hours ironing) smelling of – god forbid!! - a pub! High ceilings and columns give this place an old-fashioned-but-classy feel, and aren’t too too wannabe-trendy or try-hard-cool. If you want that, go to Cafe Orgasmic.
