Death in Vegas, ‘Milk it (The Best of Death in Vegas)’
You have to love a band that can be this honest when naming their greatest hits compilation. On first glance, Milk It appears to be a cut and paste job of the best bits of Death in Vegas. However, disc one plays as an immaculately crafted, deeply evocative journey of a band that we all unconsciously grew up with. Commencing with the classic Aisha, the album builds to a climax taking the listener all the way down to Rematerialised, inducing the kind of relaxed euphoria which is usually only available through narcotics (not that we at nouse in any way condone that sort of thing).
The second disk is initially less accessible, consisting of remixes aimed at the diehard fan, but it’s a credit to the band’s innovative powers as no two tracks sound the same. Even people who hate dance music in all its forms will find tracks like the mellow yet edgy Twist and Crawl and the sweetly disturbing One More Time worth a listen.
The collection covers the band so comprehensively that it makes the perfect Death in Vegas introduction for absolute beginners. Anyone who already owns most of the material should buy this anyway for the beautifully macabre sleeve art work, and for the inclusion of the haunting, hypnotic Dirge and the strangely erotic Hands Around my Throat, undisputedly their most perfect work.
