Alcuin the new super-college?

As a resident of one of the older parts of Langwith, I was concerned to read that the University seem to want to plough all their money into Alcuin, whilst leaving the rest of us with little more than a mottled pink common room and substandard, second-class accommodation.

I can’t understand why the university is getting so reared up to build a brand new campus, whilst channelling money into Alcuin, yet insist on leaving older colleges behind in the gutter. Or rather I can, but I don’t want to.

Unfortunately, it seems that Brian Cantor and his decision-making steering committees seem more intent on maximising income from conference guests and private research investors. Placing hapless undergraduates in a distanced second place for priority funding.

Fair dues to the University for ensuring that the disabled get the access they need at Alcuin, and that an expanding College get a JCR that suits its size. However, from my knowledge of the typical Alcuin student, it seems that an expanded JCR is the last thing they need.

Their common room always seem to be empty during the day, and if you want a game of pool, Alcuin is always the place to go. Hardly the image of a hot spot for development, with a horde of students with en-suite not daring to leave their cosy rooms.

Whereas those of us which could use the facilities, and could really do with an improvement or to have been left stumbling behind. Forced to take second place to a college devoid of spirit.
