Okay, we get it, you are messed up and hate boys, you feel alone and lost…don’t we all sometimes? I give her some credit for looking so pretty because whatever she lacks in talent she makes up in looks. In the inlay booklet she appears wearing outfits similar to Amy Lee’s from Evanescence, playing the dark angry chick meets sexy cover girl. However, to praise her image sums up the state of this album; despite apparently wanting to present herself as something other than a typical pop star, she has concentrated too hard on how she looks and not enough on how she sounds.
Avril has co-written all the songs on this album, so I’m hoping that such a display of anger has at least been therapeutic for her and I haven’t been listening the last 43 minutes in vain. Chantal Kreviazuk (who contributed with songs in the Armaggedon, Dawson‘s Creek and Serendipity Soundtracks) has helped her write most songs and this explains the more lovey-dovey ones like ‘Fall To Pieces’ and ‘Freak Out’.
My personal favourite track is the single ‘Don’t Tell Me’, where she reaches the peak of her anger and kicks her guy out of bed: it is quite a catchy tune. She seems to have moved from kicking doors on her last album to kicking boys on this one. Another less poor track is ‘How Does It Feel’ – the chorus will remind you of The Cranberries.
Occasionally, the guitars save the album (if you can hear past her screaming in a squeaky voice) and steal the show in ‘He Wasn’t’, ‘My Happy Ending’, and ‘I Always Get What I Want’. All in all, this is very repetitive if you listen to the entire album; same young angry Avril, and although slightly more respectable than her last one, it’s not as good as her record company have made it out to be.
