10,000 metres for charity
A fairly new club, Swim and Water Polo has been busy getting its feet wet this season, and will be hosting a charity swim Sunday of week five. “It is essentially a sponsored swim where participants nominate a distance they intend to swim, and receive sponsorship per metre or a flat rate for their efforts,” commented Jay Allnutt, president of the club.
The club is made up of 45 people of all swimming levels from casual swimmers to those who have been training for years. Swimmers will be given three hours to attempt to reach their goal. “Some of us wanted a bit of a challenge, so we are attempting 10,000 metres or 400 laps,” said Allnutt about the top swimmers’ participation in the event.
The money raised from this event will be split in half, 50 percent going to the Athletic Union’s annual charity and the other half being donated to the Hullgate School that offers its facilities free to the club for its Monday and Wednesday night practices. “We are getting some participants from the Hullgate School as well,” commented Allnutt, “it will be good to work together for our causes.”
In the end they will add up the total metres the team swam. “Optimistically we would like to think that in total we could make it to Istanbul, but we should make it at least as far as London,” claims Allnutt.
The team is also busy preparing for its BUSA competitions as well. The first year York has been able to participate in BUSA at the team level, they placed third in the short course competitions last year only behind Lancaster by half a point.
This term, individuals from the team will participate in the long course BUSA competitions beginning with a meet against Sheffield in week 6.
“Water polo is a little more difficult because most of our team has no prior experience with the game before university,” commented Allnutt. Even so, the team is organizing a tournament at the end of the term with Durham and Hull. Furthermore, to improve their team York and York St. John have been forming a relationship that may result in a combined water polo team that can be more competitive within the University competitions.
