RAG makes leap of faith on World Aids Day

RAG and the Terrance Higgins Trust have marked World AIDS Day by absailing over 60 students off the roof of Central Hall.

RAG President, Ellie Murch, an experienced absailer, took the plunge in tandom with YSCA President, Mags Parker.

She said the jump was fun, but highlighted the “very sobering” reasons behind the event. “AIDS is one of the biggest problems that the world faces today, not only in Africa, but in Britain, in York and on campus.”

YUSU Education and Welfare Officer Ange Cheyne, said the challenge was to convince people that AIDS is a disease of poverty just as much as a disease of sexual health.”

Despite the “excellent” contribution from a large number of students, the organisers expressed their disappointment that despite sincere promises, no University staff volunteered to take the charitable plunge.

A large number of signatures were also collected to be delivered to the government’s AID’s tzar Hilary Ben, lobbying for a substantial increase in funding for AIDS development programmes.

The event raised just under £1,000 which will be split between the Terrance Higgins Trust and the North Yorksire Aids Action fund.
