Holgate Hall Attack
A group of York students came under atack outside their Holgate’s Hall residence in week 5, leaving one seriously injured.
Simon Maddern, a first year social policy student was left scarred for life after the violent assault which left him with low confidence in police ability to hunt down the culprits.
“We are easy targets for these violent thugs. The police should take student safety much more seriously.”
The group were celebrating Bonfire Night when a goup of five or six youths descended on the gathering.
A close friend of Simon’s, who was punched twice in the face during the attack described how the situation became “increasingly more tense and then turned violent.” “It was then that we knew this was turning into a serious situation” he added.
“They went away and we thought they had gone, but they returned armed with rocks wrapped in socks, which they used as make-shift weapons.” “It sounds laughable, but the consequences were anything but.”
A fist sized rock hit Simon in the head, causing serious concussion. He was rushed to hospital and treated for head injuries and shock.
The students involved were deeply critical of the “extremely slow” response by police. One commented that they “turned up, drove round and then drove off. They didn’t even bother to ring the doorbell”.
