Don’t make me cough…
Okay, so smoking harms you and others around you, we’ve all read the catchy ‘deterrents’ on the front of cigarette packets.
Everyone knows passive smoking is hazardous to health and I’m not one to argue in the face of science. However, I draw the line when it comes to a blanket ban of smoking in bars and restaurants. Personally, I can’t stand the smell of smoke when I’m eating, but for a smoker the fag in between starter and maincourse is something essential to any good meal. It’s bad enough that Pizza Hut force me to stand outside to smoke whilst trying to get my money’s worth out of the all-you-can-eat buffet!
I’m not opposed to designated no smoking areas, but saying that it is not acceptable anywhere is too far.
A bar without smoking is as much fun as a bar without booze and in my opinion alcohol has much more anti-social effects and is hardly without health consequences either.
Yes, banning smoking in bars and restaurants will probably reduce the number of smokers, but we should make our own lifestyle choices. If there are smoking sections in a bar or restaurant, no-one is forced to go and sit in them. However if there are no designated smoking sections all smokers will be marginalised and it’s not as if smoking tobacco is illegal in itself.
Don’t ban us smokers from public life, just stick us in a room together where we can pollute each others lungs to our hearts’ content, it would be the non-smokers who’d miss out in the end because after all, everyone knows all the coolest kids smoke.
