YSCA clinches Dench

Dame Judi Dench has accepted an offer to become patron of York Student Community Action.

YSCA hope the Oscar winning actress will help raise the profile of the volunteer programme.

YSCA committee members were elated by the news, which marks the end of an exhausting six-month search for a high profile figurehead. YSCA treasurer, Nicholas da Costa, stated that letters were sent to a number of celebrities last March. Dame Judi had been at the top of the shortlist, because of her connections with York.

“We are immensely grateful that Dame Judi has agreed to be our patron. This is a great opportunity for YSCA, for its internal and external image,” da Costa commented.

Mags Parker, Student Union YSCA Officer said: “Students are often seen as a lazy, drunk, money-grabbing section of the population, and this support draws attention to the fact that there are huge numbers of students who don’t fit this stereotype.”

“It’s hugely important for volunteers to be aware that people outside their immediate sphere are interested in, and appreciate, the work they do.”

In a letter to YSCA, Dame Judi, a nominee for the university chancellorship, said: “I was very impressed by…the charitable work that the students undertake…please pass on my good wishes to all the members of YSCA – I think you do a wonderful job.”

However, anyone signing up for Kids Camp in the hope of catching an elusive glimpse of the celebrity may be disappointed. Due to her busy schedule, and role in supporting many other charities, Dame Judi is unlikely to be making any personal appearances for YSCA.
