You Lose Some
York St. John’s 45
York 38
On the afternoon of the Oct. 23, the York University women’s basketball team headed to York St. John’s to face their cross town rival with York falling to St. John’s 45-38 for their fourth consecutive close loss of the season.
Some girls on the team credit the losses to the fact that they are restricted to only one hour of practice in the sports centre a week outside of their Wednesday and Friday’s games. “We have had hardly any practice, just game after game and no time to practice and improve in between,” said point guard Anna de Matos.
St. John’s came out strong in the first quarter leading 13-7, and continued their push into the second quarter where York faced their largest deficit of the game 22-12 with minutes to go in the half.
York picked up in the second half with numerous offensive boards by Tizbe Artiaga. The shots also began to fall as York went on a run scoring eleven unanswered points to level the game at 27.
It was the defense in this quarter that picked up the momentum of the game, when the girls three-two zone began to cause multiple turnovers. Under the basket Bridget Campbell and Amber Martin dominated the defensive rebounds.
Additionally, York began to successfully break the full court press that St. John’s had activated throughout the game, which forced St. John’s to play the game at York’s pace. Eventually, in the fourth quarter St. John’s removed the press because York was too effective at pushing the ball down court and beating the press crating opn lay-ups.
In the fourth quarter, St. John’s was able to outscore York by six points and win the game 45-38. Third year, Bridget Campbell was York’s leading scorer with seventeen points. Another leading contributor was T. Artiaga a first year from Mexico, whose ball handling ability and aggressive rebounding supported the team.
Captain Bridget Campbell has high hopes for the team this season, “Each girl on the team is individually talented, so when we get more practice time and learn to play well together we will have a good team,” she said.
