Tigers Take Down Geordies
York Tigers 41
Northumbria 30
At half time one supporter described the match as ‘a vicious encounter’, a contention the players and away fans had done little to refute, with a number of tackles going in high from both sides and the threat of a brawl always present. Even decisions on the referee’s part that were clearly fair provoked what could charitably be called an aggressive reaction on the part of one particularly comical geordie stereotype in the crowd.
At ten all, shortly before half time York was unfortunate to lose Chris Cowling, who limped off with an obvious pain in his calf. But despite the Northumbrian’s attempts to take advantage it was the Tigers who started to pull away mainly thanks to a combination of clever passing by the captain, Matthew ‘Magic’ Johnson and phenomenal running by man of the match Owen Rodder. This was best demonstrated in the build up to second half tries by Neil Marshall and Gary Scowcroft.
Northumberland never looked like pushovers, however, a large and extremely physical team, they did scare York more than once when they had time to run the ball at the opposing try line at speed.
It was only as the game began to close that the away team started to look tired and York were finally able to put their lead out of reach, ending the match with an emphatic eleven point victory.
