Technician takes to public transport
As Heslington village chokes in the exhaust fumes, Lab manager Dave Hay was one of three eager commuters who agreed to abandon their cars for a week, as part of a national challenge to promote alternative transport.
The BBC News Online project saw Hay using buses, trains and foot-power to get to work. However, the green option did not appeal to the university staff member, who had to leave his home in Harrogate around 60 minutes earlier each morning.
This reduced the amount of quality time he could spend with his family, something he says wouldn’t be a problem for students. Students it seems have no excuse.
There was also the more practical issue of cramped seats and extra travel costs which compounded the problems. “It means about two extra hours away from home every day and doesn’t fit in well with when I have to leave work,” Hay remarked. “I can see now how valuable the car is, but it has made me think about the effect my car has on the environment speeding through Heslington every morning.”
