Border Crossing, Ominous
Ominous is the debut album from the UK Urban collective Border Crossing, consisting of Alex Angol, Paul Mulvey and Seorais Graham. Coming from different musical backgrounds, they bring a wide variety of musical influences to the group’s sound. The result is a collection of tracks with a strong hip hop base together with fusions of jazz, soul and reggae.
West London imparts itself to the integration of cultures, and Ominous is an album that recognises differences and celebrates them. The group’s output has hints of Beanie Man and Wyclef, with strong reggae and dancehall undertones, mixed with Jay-Z-style hip hop.
‘More to Life (Ominous)’ features female vocalist Alex Watson, the rapping talents of Sincere (a relative unknown from South London) and reggae artist Ricky Rankin. It is a soulful combination of hip-hop with an edgy jazz vibe. Meanwhile, the track ‘Dance For Your Life’ has a solid reggae tempo which reinforces its role as a chill out anthem.
The album is unlikely to get you up on the floor and lacks strong dance tunes; however it has some powerful beats and is successful in creating a laid back vibe that is just the thing for kicking back and relaxing.
