York Overtake the Blues

In the final race meet of last season, the Oxbridge Varsity – York Karting – supposedly a mere invitee to the exclusive event at Dayton Milton Keynes creamed the blues in a repetition of their 2001 season success. YUKC entered two 4-man teams at Varsity, after the 3 hour race York A finished 1st and came away with the title of Varsity Champions 2003.

This latest victory rounded off a successful season for the club, who entered two 4-man teams in the prestigious British University Karting Championships, which attracted 38 teams from Universities all over England and Wales. The Championship consisted of two test days (to allow drivers to get used to the incredible 80mph top speed of the karts) and five rounds at five different racing venues in England.

With consistently strong drives from the likes of Adam Maskell and Darren Sloan for York B, and from John Emerson, Rick Selby, and Steve Wigfull for York A, York B finished 24th overall, and York A finished 14th overall. York A were particularly proud of their 14th place, as they won the BUKC Rookie Championship for the 2nd year running, a Championship for teams fielding drivers who do not compete individually at a national level.

YUKC are looking forward to another great season of Karting, and not just against other Universities. Races are regularly organized for club members to race against each other to find out who is the best in the club at each circuit the club visits. Last year saw Adam Maskell and Mark Read win their respective classes in the YUKC organized Karting Club Championship 2003.

For those who fancy their chances at getting selected to represent York University in this season’s BUKC, they have opportunities to impress the YUKC Committee at Karting events in the first few weeks of Term 1. Come along to the YUKC stall for a chat at the AU Mart in the Sports Centre on Thursday of week 1 (9th October). If, however, you would prefer just to have a laugh on track with their mates, why not come and see us too.
