James College – Top of the Sport Leagues

After the trophy remaining with Goodricke for six years in a row, and being lost in someone’s backroom after the 2002 season, James broke the deadlock of College Sport last year earning 256.5 points a clear 37 ahead of their nearest rivals Vanbrugh, whilst the defending champions slipped to third with 216pts. Nik Engineer put such success down to winnning many of the first team leagues. The loss of Third Year students leaving for the big wide world has left College sport wide open again, a repeat performance is not in the bag yet, "I’m not as convinced as last year, it all depends on this year’s intake" Nik cautiously remarked.

With such pressure on the Freshers, College sport kicks off in Friday of week 2 with mixed volleyball followed by an intense Sunday with sports from football and mixed hockey out in the field, and mixed basketball and badminton in the Sports Centre, James’ confidence in the indoor events remains high after dominating last years basketball, Jo Staples confidently declared, "Our basketball team is class" .

The schedule of College Sport can run into the rut of the same few frantically playing every sport in the week, with Jo having had to "play three hours of college sport", before now, Freshers can expect a zealous recruitment via poster, website and kitchen campaigns to avert this.

While AU Vice President, Stuart Leslie commented that "James Sports reps are just too sad to do anything else", the slur appears slightly unfair, as he rubs shoulders with Nik Engineer as AU Referee Coordinator, in his bid to avoid last year’s wranglings over their lack in football, whilst Kate Hayes spends her Wednesdays on the Hockey 2nds team, and Jo plays her part on the 1sts. They insist, however, that such obsession is not necessary for the average College player, Staples remarked "College Sport continues to be a lot of fun"
