The project, funded by the Wellcome Trust, is part of a government initiative to establish a National Centre for Science Learning. The proposals include a 200-capacity bar and restaurant, in addition to a 300-seat lecture theatre. The building would open in 2005.
Eric Hannah, Strategic Projects Manager, explained that the venue may be utilised as a campus food outlet. However, hopes of SU or college events being staged there could remain speculation. Further negotiations will occur if York gets the green light in the autumn. "There may be some restrictions laid down by the Wellcome Trust that we're not aware of at this stage," Hannah commented.
