SU Crisis
NUS Con-troversy
York’s delegation report from the annual NUS Conference reads like a calculated attack on the Socialist Worker Student Society. The report, penned by Jewish Society Chair Hugo Bieber reflects his anger at the behaviour of SWSS members at conference. Allegedly, Bieber was aggrieved by protests held outside a fringe meeting organised by J-Soc’s parent organisation the right-wing Union of Jewish Students and addressed by Shimon Peres.
Bieber points out that Peres won the Nobel Peace Prize. He argues in the report that SWSS were wrong to label him a ‘War Criminal’. Interesting to note that Bieber failed to mention that Peres is the only Nobel prize-winner to have had the Nobel Committee state that they officially regretted their decision after he (as Minister of Defence in 1996) oversaw the slaughter of over 800 Palestinian civilians at a UN post in Lebanon.
“On Your Marks…”
YUSU President Tom Connor announced the first (annual?) “Who’s the Fastest President” competition at the UGM last Tuesday to be held in week 6. The ‘ultimate student-union type race’ will consist of one lap of the running track next to the sports centre contested by Connor and President-elect Chris Jones. Connor expressed concern that the ‘skinny little git’ (indie boy Jones) might demonstrate greater agility than him on the running track. However, he was still confident he would ‘whip’ his successor…at least in the showers afterwards.
Wicked Whisper…
Which new Tory SU Officer assumed the role of a real gentleman by offering a [female] political nemesis his coat on a chilly evening walk back to the hotel at the NUS Conference in Blackpool over Easter?
YUSU Campaigns?
Following the debacle of the inquorate SU referendum on free education policy last term, questions are being asked about the lack of a YUSU campaigns operation. In fairness, new Campaigns officers, Siobhan, Sophie and Sherine are possibly still getting to grips with their new role. As regards the fizzling out of many YUSU campaigns at the end of last term, is it coincidental that the demise of the free education campaign occurred immediately after the annual YUSU elections?
