Politics In Brief

MP and anti- war campaigner George Galloway has been suspended from the Labour Party pending the results of an investigation into an allegation that he has ‘brought the party into disrepute’. It is assumed this refers to his strong criticism of the British government during the war on Iraq when he described Messrs Blair and Bush of acting ‘like wolves’.
Mr Galloway has described the decision as ‘completely unjust’ pointing out that former Labour ministers Keith Vaz and Peter Mandelson were not suspended whilst under investigation for misconduct of arguably more serious nature.

Speculation is mounting that President Robert Mugabe’s reign of terror in Zimbabwe may be coming to an end. Senior Zanu-PF figures have admitted privately that massive unemployment and inflation figures indicate the need for change at the top of government. Talks involving President Mbeki of South Africa, Mr Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai of the opposition MDC may culminate with the ‘honorable’ resignation of Mugabe. The MDC and ruling Zanu-PF could then negotiate to form an interim coalition government.
