Coffee Culture
Last Tuesday I had a hangover. As hangovers go it wasn’t a really bad one; there was no bed-ridden groaning for aspirin or impromptu redecoration of the bathroom, but nevertheless, I didn’t feel quite right. This sort of hangover requires careful handling – play it the right way and you could be out again that very night, carousing the streets of York with reckless abandon… get it wrong and you’ll go to bed at 9.30, blurring at the edges as if drawn by a malicious five year old.
The key to achieving your former state of peace and wellbeing is simple: Lunch. I say lunch, what I mean is the meal that one has around 3.30 in the afternoon for which no sensible name has yet been discovered, but whatever its called, it forms a vital part of the recovery process.
With this in mind my friend and I set off at a slow shuffle, looking for somewhere to eat. This was no easy task. What you eat must be substantial (for soaking up the excess alcohol), fatty (for energy), and not too greasy (otherwise you'll be sick). We eventually came upon Coffee Culture, a small but tall coffee shop nestling somewhere on Goodramgate.
Don’t be put off by the stools. Its true that in our sketchy state of mind these posed quite a challenge, and combined with large plates and minute tables it could all have gone so horribly wrong. Nevertheless, this unparalleled feat of dexterity was worth every twisted contortion. The food in Coffee Culture is superb, the menu is huge, and they bake their own bread on the premises, all of which more than make up for the odd shape you may find yourself in when you leave.
I had a flash-fried steak sandwich with melted stilton, mushrooms and caramalised onions. It was a massive, towering, beast of a sandwich, which could conceivably require flashing red lights on the top to warn low flying aircraft. As a small capitulation to health and clean living we both drank smoothies, which were thick and brilliant, and frothy as rabid dogs. It all came to just under £10 a head, which is now pretty much the standard price in York for whatever that meal is called. What is not standard is the food in coffee culture, and if you are ever in a similar alcohol induced quandary, I suggest you give it a try.
