women’s officers
"Our election proves that everyone who thinks that the post of Women’s officer is irrelevant can fuck off!" It may be a somewhat skewed logic but Megan Evans, Katie Graham and Alice Dawson certainly can’t be accused of lacking enthusiam or conviction. This threesome are all SU Exec old guard, and will no doubt find a comfortable niche in the workings of the Daw Suu building. As founder members of controversial women’s focus group, 51%, Megan and Katie, both previous campaigns officers, have a strong grasp of what women at York need and want, whilst Alice Dawson was the incumbent Women’s Officer. However, with no-confidence motions and an attempt to radically alter the mandate in the last year, the post of Women’s Officer is one of the most controversial in the Union. When asked how they felt about claims that, with no Men’s Officer, the post created an inequality they acknowledged Men’s liberation as a possible issue. However they argue discrimination against women permeates all levels of society, "women’s needs are generally greater". That said, if this entails restriciting opportunities for men the girls do not see any inherent problem – "in certain circumstances positive discrimination is needed".
