Turning the Tables

Cementing their position as one of the most successful AU clubs on campus, the table-tennis team overcame a scare to book a Championship quarter-final date with defending National Champions Middlesex with a home victory over Midlands Conference winners Nottingham. York’s team of Markus Siedel, Rob Hudson, Iain Lindley and Thanoo overcame the East Midlands outfit 9-7 largely thanks to match-winning hauls from Siedel – who won all four of his matches – and Hudson, who collected three victories. Nottingham – missing England star Alex Perry – showed brief resistance through James Kirk, defeating Lindley and Hudson in close games, but ultimately succumbed to the York team’s greater strength in depth.

York’s progression to the last eight takes their achievements one step beyond their success last year, when they went out 9-8 to a strong Aberdeen side in the last 16. However, that achievement secured a place in the newly-created Northern Premier Division, where back-to-back wins over Loughborough and a memorable home victory over last year’s overall runners-up Birmingham saw them qualify for the Championship in third place. The team, including club captain Anton Wu, will now travel south to North London on Wednesday Week 10 looking to book a place in the national semi-finals.
