David Sammels, the uncontested candidate for Societies Officer has been elected amid a furore which has seen bitter recriminations between campus Tories and those whom he terms the "far left" on campus. During his acceptance of the post, the slagging match continued as shouts of "Gay Tory" resounded. But Sammels sees the election of Conservatives to the SU Exec as a refreshing change and believes his policies will be pragmatic over utopian, criticising some aspects of ‘international’ SU policy as being "unprofitable, unreasonable or plain unachievable". Sammels also lambasted the use of ‘dirty tactics’ against Tory candidates during the election campaign as being "very systematically planned". Whilst stating this he also hopes that the rift between the Tories and the left wing on campus will be healed over the coming year, he commented "I don’t think many members of the far left will accept the result". Sammels’ tenure in the Societies role may signal a new direction in the budgeting of societies on campus, hinting that the grants to societies should reflect any commonality they are perceived to share, "societies of a similar nature should have that reflected in their budget".
