racial equality

New Racial Equality officers Ellena Valizadeh and Kalli Tariq Hameed won their positions unopposed. With membership of organisations such as the Anti-Nazi League, and a history of involvement in campaigns on campus, they feel their presence in the SU is vindicated. Both have a particular interest in the portrayal of race in the media, commenting how "quite often the press is used to propagate racism" and see this as a potential issue both on and off campus. On a personal level, Valizadeh resigned from her post as Vision’s Photo Editor in disgust at a recent article. They are also concerned about racism in ostensibly comic pieces, such as that which appeared in nouse’s innuendo section earlier this year, but consider that student opinion is the deciding factor in these cases. Action should only be taken "if students are offended". As a consequence they welcome the new Media Charter. The pair also voiced concern at what they perceive as a lack of ethnic diversity on campus pointing out that the university’s small size could be a possible contributing factor. To address this they aim to provide ‘greater accessibility’, focussing upon the interests of all ethnic minorities represented on campus.
