A wind farm and fair trade chocolate digestive biscuits are the modest aims of next year’s Environments Officers, Ben Velmans and Sian Jones, in their bid to turn York into the greenest campus in Britain. In their aftermath of their electoral success, Ben, who is re-elected to the post, with new partner in grime Sian, stressed that both practical everyday measures and more ambitious proposals were necessary to greenify campus. Recycling bins in all colleges, and badgering Computer Services into only using recycled printer paper are first on the agenda, however, in the longer term Ben is keen to stress the pair’s eagerness to have some input into the massive Campus Three plans given the likely impact on the local environment. Ben highlighted the issue of electricity generation as a way the University could help set the environmentally-friendly standard by building a wind farm in the surrounding fields. Other schemes could involve the use of rainfall water to flush toilets. Another issue the pair were keen to stress was the promotion of fair trade products on campus, with Velmans concluding: "I feel that if, by the end of the year, Brian Cantor is not drinking fair trade tea and munching fair trade biscuits then we would have failed."
