The newly elected Campaigns Officers, Siobhan O’Gorman, Sophie Whitehead and Sherine Triboulsi were visibly basking in the glory of their electoral victory as they descended from the winners’ platform on Friday. Describing their role as ‘fighting for student issues with a united voice’ they hope to raise the post’s profile and improve union accessibility by using Vanbrugh stalls, campus media and doorknocking to improve student contact. The campaigning experience of the three Officers, all first-years, has been concentrated within the Stop the War, Socialist Worker, Free Palestine and V-Day societies. They plan to fight for 24-hour portering, banning conferences during term-time, free education and safe accommodation, whilst campaigning against rent increases and differential rates. Discussing their strategy, they hinted strongly at direct action. They hope to improve the notoriously low attendance of UGMs by targeting the vast population of Halifax College in their campaigns. Their overall mission is, in O’Gorman’s words, to “carry on the good job done by the previous Campaigns Officers, pushing even harder and going even further”.
