Neil Barnes is a very genial and affable person. A first year history student, Neil has clear and determined views about what he wants to do and what he has been elected to fulfil. Speaking after his official press conference, he stressed that it is disappointing and demoralising for students to have to struggle simply to cross campus. In particular, the route through Langwith College. Neil has personal experience with the University disability provision. He has profound hearing impairment and through the Disability Advisor was provided with the essential aids to help him deal with his personal daily and academic challenges. However, he considers that although the University has a generally good attitude, it is failing a considerable proportion of students simply because it is not aware of their difficulties. Put simply, until the staff step outside their office and try to navigate campus in a wheelchair they will not fully understand the difficulties that exist. Neil’s top priority is to organise an assessment of students with disabilities and identify where problem areas lie. He is keen to co-ordinate and pool the resources of the four liberation officers, in the process of taking steps towards achieving their common aims.
